A hooded, faceless figure holds a key in front of a cracked, circular background. Two crossed swords with key-shaped hilts are positioned below the figure. The image has a dark, distressed texture.

Storyteller only Guild
Alignment: Lawful Evil

The Thief Guild is a clandestine organization operating within the hidden underbelly of Norune . Unlike overt other Guilds, their influence permeates society through a network of informants, fences, and skilled operatives. Much like the Adventurer’s Guild, the Thief Guild is a non-player-joinable entity, existing solely as a crucial tool for Storytellers to weave intricate plotlines and introduce unique challenges to the World of Norune.

Purpose and Function

The Thief Guild serves as the central hub for all illicit activities that require a degree of organization and discretion. Their primary functions include:

  • Distribution of Rogue Quests: They meticulously manage and assign tasks that fall outside the purview of conventional law, such as heists, infiltration missions, data acquisition, and sabotage. These quests originate from a diverse clientele, ranging from disgruntled nobles seeking to undermine rivals to desperate commoners in need of “specialized” assistance.
  • Facilitation of Rogue Craft and Skills: The Guild acts as a nexus for knowledge and training in the darker arts. While players cannot join, the Thief Guild offers access (through Storyteller discretion) to resources for developing thieving skillssubterfuge techniques, and specialized rogue crafts, like lock-picking, trap disarming, forgery, and disguise. This often involves the discovery of hidden stashes of tools, blueprints, or the elusive guidance of a Guild-affiliated trainer.
  • Operation of the Black Market: The Thief Guild maintains an extensive and highly secretive black market network. This illicit economy deals in stolen goods, rare and contraband items, forbidden knowledge, and exotic materials that are impossible to acquire through legitimate channels. For Storytellers, this provides a dynamic avenue for players to offload ill-gotten gains or seek out hard-to-find resources, creating unique narrative opportunities and moral dilemmas.

Role in Storytelling (Non-Player Entity)

The Thief Guild is an invaluable asset for Storytellers looking to introduce elements of intrigue, moral ambiguity, and urban espionage into their narratives. By controlling the flow of quests and access to the black market through this guild, Storytellers can:

  • Create Complex Narratives: Design intricate heist scenarios, espionage missions, or investigations into criminal underworlds.
  • Introduce Moral Choices: Present players with ethically challenging dilemmas where the “right” choice is not always clear, forcing them to navigate shades of gray.
  • Provide Unique Rewards and Challenges: Offer access to rare and powerful items unavailable elsewhere, or introduce formidable adversaries from the criminal underworld.

The Guild’s secretive and player-restricted nature allows Storytellers complete control over the darker side of their world, ensuring that every encounter with the Thief Guild is impactful and tailored to the ongoing narrative.
