Keepers of the Shifting Sand

Keepers of the Shifting Sand: Sovereignty in Servitude

Welcome to the heart of the great desert, where the only constant is change, and the most dangerous knowledge is held by those who appear to serve. The Keepers of the Shifting Sand are not rulers, but guardians. They are a highly sophisticated desert organization that has perfected the art of mastering the masters.

We are dedicated to the preservation of the desert’s wild, untamable soul. Our method is not through open conquest, but through subtle influence, impeccable service, and absolute intelligence.

The Two Faces of the Keepers

The Keepers operate with a dual identity, giving them unmatched reach and plausible deniability across the continent:

1. The Sh’ryi Bar Ankh: The School of Servitude

Our public face is the Sh’ryi Bar Ankh at the Sabhaif Oasis, founded by the strategic mastermind, Hakama (The Inheritor). We take in the forgotten—the orphaned, the exiled, and the abandoned—and train them in the epitome of servitude.

  • The Khaadim and Khaadima: These exceptional agents are masters of etiquette, philosophy, and lethal discretion. Graduates are placed in the courts of dignitaries, merchant princes, and kings. From their position of trust, they shape politics with whispers of wisdom, guile, and the edge of a dagger. They are indispensable and, therefore, untouchable.
  • The Power of Service: Outsiders see slaves. We see ultimate freedom. By making our agents essential to those in power, the Keepers ensure the desert’s interests are protected at the highest level without ever firing a public shot.

2. The Oathsworn: The Silent Guardians

The inner, monastic core of the Keepers is the military arm that protects our sacred duty.

  • The Oathsworn are the elite guards of the Oasis, sworn to celibacy in duty and single-minded focus. They wear the Grit Veil and patrol the deep sands, guarding the hidden Oases of Clarity—the vital memory and magic of the desert.
  • Swift Retribution: Their mission is to enforce the law that change is the only constant. They move like ghosts, striking with swift and unforgiving retribution against any who seek to permanently exploit, dominate, or destroy the shifting, natural state of the sands. Led by the Oathsworn Valorant, they are the true protectors of the desert’s ancient heart.

Our Creed

The Keepers of the Shifting Sand do not seek a throne; we seek balance. We believe that by controlling the information and the infrastructure that surround the desert, we can ensure the vast, beautiful wilderness remains wild and free. Our ultimate loyalty is to the shifting sands—our truest master.

The Keepers of the Shifting Sand: Faction Hierarchy

The hierarchy of the Keepers is structured to reflect their dual purpose: a necessary civil authority to manage the Sabhaif Oasis, and a caste system designed to train their most valuable agents.

I. Governing & Civil Authority (The Oasis Leadership)

These are the established, recognized ranks responsible for the governance of the Sabhaif Oasis and the smooth operation of the trade hub and the School.

RankDescription
The InheritorThe ultimate ruler of the Sabhaif Oasis. This title signifies the one who lays down the sacred laws (“the inheritor’s way and rule of law”) and guides the destiny of the Keepers.
Ma’mur of SabhaifThe chief administrative officer, serving as the Mayoral adjunct to the Inheritor. The Ma’mur oversees the daily civil affairs and infrastructure of the Oasis.
High JusticarThe chief judge of the court, tasked with ensuring all judgments adhere to the will and rule of law of the hierarchy. Appointed directly by the Inheritor or the Ma’mur.
Archivist of SabhaifThe primary teacher and curator of knowledge within the Sh’ryi Bar Ankh school. They are responsible for training the khaadim/khaadima and preserving the faction’s lore.
Quart’rmast’rThe quartermaster is responsible for handling all trade, logistics, and resource management for the Oasis, ensuring its prosperity as a vital trade hub.
ShopkeeperThe general rank for merchants and necessary tradespeople operating within the Oasis.

II. The Agent Caste (The Sh’ryi System)

This unique caste is the hidden strength of the Keepers, representing the trained “servants” who serve as the faction’s eyes, ears, and subtle hands across the land.

Rank/TermDescription
Exemplar KhaadimThe highest-ranking trainees, essentially citizens of the Sh’ryi and the Keepers. They are elevated above other Khaadim/Khaadima and hold themselves to an exceptionally high standard as a final rite before graduation and deployment.
KhaadimaThe term for a female agent/servant. She is intensely trained in the Sh’ryi to become an “supreme” and “valued” servant. While initially belonging to a “master,” she can earn freedom through distinguished service in battle or by the will of her master.
KhaadimThe term for a male agent/servant, trained alongside the Khaadima to achieve the epitome of servitude and political influence.
Sh’ryiNot a rank, but the physical structure (a building) reserved exclusively for the Keepers of the Shifting Sand, the Khaadima, and the Oathsworn. This is the living and training quarters for the agents. Freed Seersha are also permitted to stay here to learn.

III. Military Authority (The Oathsworn)

The celibate, single-minded guards who protect the Oasis and enforce the will of the Inheritor and the faction’s sacred duty to the desert.

RankDescription
Oathsworn ValorantThe supreme leader of the entire Oathsworn force. This individual commands all military assets and reports directly to the Inheritor.
The OathswornThe main body of elite, high-ranking guards responsible for the personal security of the upper ranks of the Keepers and acting as the faction’s strategic fighting force in the deep desert.
Sabhaif SentinelThe lower-ranking guard of the Keepers. They are tasked with regular guard duty, patrol, and maintaining order within the boundaries of the Sabhaif Oasis.
